Happy Small Business Week

*These people really need to get along!!

I was so busy with the NATO festivities we held at Knit 1 that I totally missed this auspicious, week-long celebration!  I was thinking about my next post today when I ran into my neighbor who told me about some community work that she's doing that has the potential to positively affect some school-age kids for a lifetime.  She also told me about an author she likes who writes on small businesses and entrepreneurship named Seth Godin.  I was intrigued so I spent some time looking at his posts and books.  I especially like the title:  Small is the New Big.  Running into her was just serendipitous, and it made me reflect on the whole issue of "small" and how with this economy we have all scaled down.  How important our neighborhoods and neighbors have become.  How we are exploring closer to home for entertainment and shopping and many of us have had wonderful staycations the last few years.  We ride our bikes or walk.  We patronize local businesses, like Knit 1.  We are building communities and looking for ways to get involved and improve things for ourselves and others.  So a shout out to all our customers, neighbors and fellow small business owners!  Yea for our community!!

*Not really about small business this picture, but about community.  I love this little lane, I want to live there!  Here's where this came from http://www.tumbleweedhouses.com/blogs/tumbleweed/tagged/houses?page=2

Nato Summit Escape: Day 5 - Suri Sunday

Alpaca Love So, did ya guess?  C'mon did'ya?  Really???

The Suri alpaca is a member of the camelid family, which includes the llama, Huacaya alpaca, the wild vicuna and guanaco, and yes, the camel. The Suri dates back between 5 to 20 thousand years and is known from archaeological records to have been domesticated for 6,000 years.

Among the people of the Andes, the woven fabric from the fleece of the alpaca was so soft and alluring that it was used as currency. The Suri alpaca has unique fiber characteristics that distinguish the Suri from the rest of the camelid family. Unlike the soft fuzzy look of the Huacaya alpaca, the Suri's long, separate, distinctive locks are comprised of twisted or flat fibers that drape down the sides of the Suri's body. The Suri's fiber has a cool, slick hand; soft as cashmere, warmer than wool, and has the luster of silk.

The first Suris were imported to the United States from Bolivia in the winter of 1991. Subsequent imports came in 1993, 1995, 1996 and 1998 from Peru, Chile and Bolivia. World wide, Suris account for only about 1% of the total alpaca population and are so rare that there may be fewer of them than the vicuna, the wild ancestor of the alpaca.

All alpaca and alpaca blends are on sale today!  Yup!!  I know, you couldn't wait, but now you don't have to!!!  20% off.  Bring a picture of an alpaca (any breed) and get another 10% off your yarn purchase.
